My work is mainly about folding and unfolding structures. This method of working with folds started as a way to make charcoal drawings larger than I thought possible, while also re-imagining part of everyday housework. It has become a way to let the canvas have a say in what I make with it, and to think about the emergence of patterns and flexible geometry. The way soft structures can protect and then fall away from a new form is a recurring interest.
Some other inspirations include the relationship between art and science, the development of meaningful patterns through layers of change, and the question of what beauty is. I also pay attention to the way it feels to see or not to see something. Sometimes I work in non-studio spaces, like the park, and references to physics and nature come up a lot in the work. Maybe this is about looking for common ground or trying to understand what it means for something to have authority or to be real in the world.
I recently completed a BFA at OCAD University in Toronto where I studied drawing and painting. Previously I studied at Loughborough University School of the Arts in East Midlands, UK, and I also have a Hon.B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in physics and environmental studies. My main interests have been beauty, inner experience and the different ways people see. Awards received include scholarships from the Women’s Art Association of Hamilton, OCADFA and Loughborough University School of the Arts. My work has been exhibited recently in Toronto, Hamilton and Florence.
Born in Toronto, I was raised in Southern Ontario, Canada, and Southern California, USA. I live in Ontario now and like philosophy almost as much as music.
